My Masters
The Yang style
I studied Yang Style with Dr Chi Chiang Tao following Cheng Man-Ch'ing’s adjustments. Dr Chi was a senior student of Cheng Man-Ch'ing and studied with him in Taiwan for 20yrs. Dr Chi had previously studied within the Yang family lineage in China for 10 years before he moved to Taiwan.
I made several visits to Dr Chi over a four year period, staying with him in his house and taking one-to-one classes with him daily. I was privileged to practise partner work with Sam Tam, under Dr Chi’s supervision. Sam Tam is a highly regarded ‘I Chuan’ practitioner.
Dr Chi’s skills were very hard to see. He said that he followed the ‘Super soft’ school. Pushing him was like wrestling with so much silk and he felt as though he would disappear despite being clearly in front of you. When it came to ‘responding’ he threw me easily ‘with his chi’ and I felt very little force. Under Dr Chi Chiang Tao’s tutelage I studied; short form, long form, sword form, pushing hands & da lu & White Crane chi kung.

The Chen style
I have studied continuously with Master Chen Xiao Wang since his very first class in the UK in 1994.
Chen Xiao Wang is titular head of Chen family and 19th generation Chen family Tai Chi lineage.
When he was seven years old he began training under his father, Chen Zhaoxu, and grandfather, Chen Fa Ke.
His movements are smooth and he appears strikingly mindful. In standing he is impressively quiet.
Yet Master Chen’s power is prodigious and easy to see with the eye. His ‘twining force’ is immense and he is difficult to affect in any way. His ‘fa jin’ is explosive and sudden, easily the most impressive I’ve seen. Under Master Chen’s tutelage I have studied; Lao Jia, Xin Jia, Chan Si Jin, Zhan Zhuang, Yin Yang (Yijin Jing) Chi Kung.

Hsing-I Ch'uan
I study Hsing-I Ch'uan with Prof. Lin Chang-Li in his house as his personal student. He first studied Yang style tai chi chuan for five years and then met the renowned Wang Shujin. Wang discipled him and he trained under him constantly until his death. Under Wang's tutelage he learnt Wang's 'ji bin gong', Tai Chi, Pa Gua & Hsing I, plus the associated chi kung.
Prof. Lin was a very diligent student. He practised along the road, on the train to his work, in the corridor at work and along the road home ! He has Wang's complete system of all three skills.
Prof. Lin looks very slight and watching his moves you could be forgiven for thinking them unremarkable but secreted within is 'real gong fu' and bones that feel like steel! As the layers peel away I am constantly surprised by what cannot be seen. At over 70 years old his ongoing commitment to his art and his vitality are remarkable.
Though he no longer accepts students my study of Hsing I Chuan with Prof. Lin is on-going . . .
